There was a time in the early history of our planet, some 100 million years ago, or even less when there was no Moon in the sky.
Our ancestors recall the time when a pre-Lunar civilization lived on this planet without a Moon.
The riddle of the Moon is one of the greatest mysteries of cosmogony. How old is the Moon? Where does it come from?
In this article, UFOArea takes a closer look at the mystery of the Moon and the possibility of pre-Lunar civilizations.
There are a number of theories attempting to explain how the Moon came into existence. Unfortunately, all of them raise additional questions regarding the Moon`s age and origin.
Some scientists suggest that the Moon was formed during the same period as Earth and from the same material. Another hypothesis is that the Moon was once an independent planet that was captured by the earth`s gravitational force when passing by, and it has been revolving around the Earth ever since. Yet, according to another theory, the Moon was originally a portion of the terrestrial crust. The Earth spun so fast that a chunk broke off, leaving behind the bed of the Pacific Ocean. Then there is the giant impact theory, suggesting that a large celestial body struck our planet a long time ago, and this collision led to the creation of the Moon. The impact theory is currently the most popular one, but all of the mentioned hypotheses have certain physical problems.
If the Moon and our planet are from the same time and material, they should be composed of the same substances, but this is not the case.
According to the analysis of the moon soil samples brought back by astronauts, the composition of the Moon is different from that of Earth. Earth has more iron and less silicon deposited in it. If the Moon was originally formed in another part of the galaxy and entered our solar system, it should have flown towards the Sun instead of being held by Earth. The Moon cannot be a part of our planet because it is too chemically different. In addition, the Earth could never have spun fast enough to throw the Moon into orbit.
The giant impact theory is the most plausible one, but there is a significant problem with this hypothesis. It is based on the assumption that at the time of the impact the Earth already had a core.
The scientific dilemma is - we do not know when the core was created. Experts seem to disagree on the age. Some maintain the core was formed after the oldest Moon rocks and not before, which of course put the giant impact theory into question.
All of these theories raise even more questions and we are not wiser than before the first Apollo Mission in 1969.
We must therefore conclude - we do not know where the Moon came from or how old it is.
If we look closer at some ancient records, we learn surprising new things about our satellite. There are legends that tell of a time when the Moon did not accompany our planet.
Ancient Greek and Roman scholars mention a time when "the Moon was not near the Earth". Ancient records refer to people known as the Pelasgians, Proselenes, and the Arcadians. They were beings belonging to a very ancient race that inhabited our planet in times when there was no Moon.
According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, (384 BC - 322 BC), before the Hellenes occupied Arcadia, the land was inhabited by a group of people known as the Pelasgians. They "occupied the land already before there was moon in the sky above the earth." Plutarch, the Greek historian (46 - 127) confirmed this in his writings: "There were Arcadians of Evander`s following, the so-called pre-Lunar people."
Also Ovid, a Roman poet (43 BC-17 AD) wrote of the pre-Lunar civilization. From his writings, we learn that "the Arcadians are said to have possessed the land before the birth of Jove, and the folk is older than the Moon." Apollonius of Rhodes who lived during the third century BC confirmed the presence of a very ancient pre-Lunar civilization in his writings. He wrote: "when not all of the orbs were yet in the heavens, before the Danai and the Deukalion races came into existence, and only the Arcadians lived, of whom it is said that they dwelt on mountains and fed on acorns, before there was a moon."
Giordano Bruno, an Italian philosopher (1548 - 1600) was one of the earliest modern thinkers who contemplated on the existence of a pre-Lunar civilization. In one of his books he wrote: "There are those who have believed that there was a certain time (as our mythology says) when the Moon, which was believed to be younger than the sun, was not yet created. The Arcadians, who dwelt not far from the Po, are believed to have been in existence before it (the moon)." Based on Voices from Legendary Times by Ellen Lloyd.
The Indians of Bogota also recall a world without a Moon. The tribesmen of Chibchas mention: "In the earliest times, when the moon was not yet in the heavens."
Perhaps our ancestors knew more about the origin of the Moon than we do.
