We are running out of helium
Robert Richardson worked on the superfluid properties of helium - now he worries that we are squandering our supplies of the gas

Most of us think of helium as something to fill balloons with or that makes your voice go funny when you inhale it. Why does it matter that helium supplies are running low?

There are some substitutes, but it can`t be replaced for cryogenics, where liquid helium cools superconducting magnets for MRI scanners. There is no other substance which has a lower boiling point than helium. It is also used in the manufacture of fibre optics and liquid crystal displays.

The use of helium in cryogenics is self-contained, in that the helium is recycled. The same could be done in other industries if helium was expensive enough that manufacturers thought recovering it was worthwhile.

Surely industry must be paying more and more for helium if it is in short supply.

No, the price is dictated by a calendar. The US government established a national helium reserve in 1925, and today a billion cubic metres of the gas are stored in a facility near Amarillo, Texas. In 1996 Congress passed an act requiring that this strategic reserve, which represents half the Earth`s helium stocks, be sold off by 2015. As a result, helium is far too cheap and is not treated as a precious resource.

Oil companies such as Exxon have invested heavily in extracting fossil fuels from shale, which may also contain helium. Could this come to our rescue?

The so-called Eastern oil shale in Kentucky and Ohio, which is also a source of natural gas, contains only trace amounts of helium, not the relatively large 0.5 to 2 per cent found in natural gas reserves in the American West. The same is true of North Sea gas and wells in Europe.

Say we do run out of helium - can`t we just make the stuff from something else or purify it from the air?

There is no chemical means to make helium. The supplies we have on Earth come from radioactive alpha decay in rocks. Right now it`s not commercially viable to recover helium from the air, so we have to rely on extracting it from rocks. But if we do run out altogether, we will have to recover helium from the air and it will cost 10,000 times what it does today.

The shortage of helium has been talked about for a while. Are things really getting that urgent now?

Maybe in Europe there has been a conversation, but not in the US - and the US supplies nearly 80 per cent of the helium used in the world. The problem is that these supplies will run out in a mere 25 years, and the US government has a policy of selling helium at a ridiculously low price.

What should the US government do instead?

Get out of the business and let the free market prevail. The consequence will be a rise in prices. Unfortunately, party balloons will be $100 each rather than $3 but we`ll have to live with that. We will have to live with those prices eventually anyway.

Excellent.
The same type of incident happened to the drummer I have worked with for years. he felt watched in his own home, when the rest of his family was out. So he sat down in the bedroom with his cell phone and just record the "silence." When he played it back, he could make out voices.

He sent me the recording and I cleaned it up. The voice is clearly calling his name. It called him a specific nickname. I asked him WHO would have called him that. He said only his deceased grandfather ever used that nickname. So I told him not to worry overmuch. It apparently was grandpa checking up on him. :)

I do believe in the paranormal, but 99% of the stuff on TV is garbage. lol.

Eccentricity
The orbit, of the Solar System, around the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, is eccentric.
In other words, the orbit is tilted, when compared to the galactic ecliptic.
This means that, from time to time, that orbit brings the Solar System closer to the top or bottom of the main body of stars in the galaxy and exposes us to increased levels of radiation from the galactic center.
I don`t know how often this happens, but I suppose it`s possible that such an event could be damaging.
Anybody know any more about this?

You are probably right, my guess is that they just think they are in control but just being played by the aliens. If the aliens can travel so far into the space, I`m sure they are MUCH MUCH MUCH smarter than humans and we are no match for them be it in military, technology, science nor politics.

Although, I have a strong feeling that disclosure is very close and just around the corner.

Hmmm.
Always a difficult area this.
Who`s to say the Con is what it appears to be?
Do they want you to think all the wierd events are part of their Con and they`re trying to distract you from their secret research?
Or are they making the Con transparent enough to make you think you know what it`s about, when it`s actually about deflecting you from the "truth" about alien visitation?
There`s an awful lot of rubbish spewed out by various "experts" about the probability/possibility of life off Earth, are they here, why can`t we hear their radio signals, if they`re here why don`t they make themselves known and so on.
Ignore the stories, get rid of the mysticism pumped into your head by religion and science and use pure logic and a bit of humility to think about it.
It`s not at all difficult to conclude that we are nothing special, that life is the rule not the exception, that the first civilisations arose on other planets many billions of years ago, that their technology has a myriad ways of providing fast, economical interstellar travel (so getting there is quicker than sending a radio signal) and that they are not just here clandestinely watching, but that they`ve been here long before we were and that this Solar System is a significant trade and tourism destination for thousands of alien races, who look sufficiently like us (or other earthly life forms) to go unnoticed.
Keep your eyes open and you will spot them. Some little detail that`s just a bit different. Some obvious prosthetic camouflage, not applied quite right (ears are a favourite) . Total lack of dress sense, so they look like they`ve never worn clothing before, or they`re wearing winter clothing in the heat of summer and not sweating, or wearing two left shoes with the laces untied. Various lumps and bumps under baggy, full cover clothing allied to a strange walking action, unusual body configuration - neck and head jutting forward in line with the shoulders rather than on top of the shoulders, small and overwhelmingly attractive types, with large eyes and pointed chins, often in silent groups, dressed in old fashioned ways and looking at everything as if it was the first time they`d seen it.
All of these you can and will see right in front of you on the street or on TV quiz shows (a particular favourite, they almost seem to be challenging you to spot them).
Don`t call me a nutcase until you`ve stood and watched passers-by, on a busy street or market place or shopping mall, for a few hours, and really had a good look at them. If that doesn`t work for you, try taking lots of pictures, in the same situation and analysing them later.
There`s no reason to believe that aliens should be significantly different from humans. We have a body configuration that gives us extraordinary abilities, compared to other species, with built in multiple redundancy and self repairing capability and which removes many of the environmental influences that govern the evolution of other species.
Why would life on other planets go down a different route?
The "experts" say it is bound to, because evolution is the result of a series of accidents. But this is illogical as the main deciding factor is "can this accidental individual survive in the environment it finds itself in". Nature is wasteful and profligate, but evolution tends towards intelligence and dexterity, which at a certain level allows individuals to survive in a wide variety of environments. This is evident in the human form, the result of billions of years of gradual refinement, to the point where we can create our own environment.
This form should therefore be common throughout the universe, as it is an excellent solution to common environmental problems, and something very similar is likely to appear, given sufficient time, anywhere there is life. The fine detail (and even some of the coarse detail) may be different, but recognisably humanoid should be the rule not the exception.
Sorry, I`m getting side tracked here.
I don`t believe the CIA, or whoever, have any significant role to play in the "are aliens here" question.
I think they`re surrounded by them, likely infiltrated thouroughly by them and are more likely to be puppets than puppet masters.

And I can understand your desire to believe, but not in THIS guy, he`s only after your cash.
I wouldn`t like to be in his shoes right now. There are folks about who make a good living out of exposing and destroying such people. Now THAT`S something to hope for.

Gift?
What gift?
Making vague "predictions", about common events, with no specifics about locations and so on, is not a "gift". It`s a TRICK.
A "good track record"? Of interpreting a disastrous event as being the event that the vague, non-specific "prediction" referred to?
Do me a favour!
If he can predict PRECISELY what is going to happen, when it`s going to happen, where it`s going to happen, without using the words "may", "maybe", "perhaps", "might", "could", "about", "approximately", etc, then I might give him some credit.
If he can`t, then he`s just another scam merchant.
And, yes, I can blame him for trying to make a living out of trickery.
Getting people to part with money by trickery is usually called "fraud".
Getting people to part with money in exchange for tangible, beneficial, goods or services, produced by the sweat of your brow, is called "business".
No way is this guy a businessman, any more than the leader of the "moonies".

Re: *sigh*
His website is indeed very strange but that being said, he seems to have a very good track record and also he is a regular guest on Coast To Coast AM.

I`m a little split on this issue. I mean, he has to make a living, no? I`ll give you an example : If every visitor of this website donated only $2 each month to me, I would be able to do this full time. Imagine what I could do if I did this full time... but I can`t because not only I don`t earn any money from this site, I lose money by running it.

So I don`t see anything wrong with it to earn a living off his gift... after all, the people who subscribe to his website can warn others as well. Why should all the weight be on him alone?

Just my two cents.

Don`t make me puke.
If the "ET Contacts" are so good at predicting "Sumtin gonna happen", why don`t they get down to specifics and say precisely what, where and when?
Absolute Bo**ocks.
I`m amazed that people aren`t immune to this kind of "prediction" scam by now.
1. Either an explosion or a volcano or an earthquake up to 6.5.
Don`t make me larf. Volcanos are erupting constantly somewhere on Earth. Explosions are not a rare event. Earthquakes happen every day and saying "up to 6.5" gives scope for claiming to have predicted anything from zero to 6.5. Utter garbage.
2. Thousands MAY have to relocate due to tsunami or hurricane.
It`s hurricane season - high seas, torrential rain, raging winds are common as muck. Note the prediction wasn`t "Thousands WILL have to relocate" it was "MAY have to relocate". Total Gobsh*te.
3. August 25th - let`s wait and see. My money is on this utterance from the "Great Predicto" being a wet squib.
Perhaps some further contact with ET would get more information and give some folks the chance to survive the coming holocaust?
Go for it, Predicto, do something useful! Or maybe you should get a job and do something productive for a change.
Here are my predictions.
Someone will die in a road traffic accident between now and the end of August.
An aeroplane will encounter difficulties while landing, sometime between now and the end of August.
Someone will be rescued by the Coast Guard between now and the end of August.
Let`s wait and see if I`m right, eh?
